Frequently Asked Questions

How does online counselling work?

Studies have found that online therapy is just as effective as in-person therapy. There are many advantages to on-line counselling for people living in rural areas, small towns or busy metropolitan cities with traffic and parking problems. It is convenient if childcare is not available. You can be comfortable at home, and keeps costs down. But it’s not for everyone.

How much does it cost?
Couples counselling is $130 and Individual counselling is $105 per session.
How long is a counselling session?
Sessions are between 60 -75 minutes.
What is your cancellation Policy
Less than 24 hrs notice of cancellation or need to reschedule a session will result in a full session charge.
Am I going to be blamed?
Emotionally Focused Therapy is a non-blaming approach to couples counselling. Most behaviour, even if it misses the mark entirely, makes sense in its wider context. I’ll help you both to understand what is driving unhelpful or hurtful behaviour. I believe people usually have good intentions at heart, but may struggle to communicate love and security in a way that their partner can hear. Emotionally Focused Therapy helps couples find new and positive ways to communicate their love.
Do I need to read the book, Hold Me Tight?

It’s a real advantage for a couple to read or listen to the book, Hold Me Tight by Dr Susan Johnson (the originator of Emotionally Focused Therapy), when starting couples counselling. All of us get caught in one of the negative interactions at some point in our love relationship. You are not alone! This book helps couples make sense of what goes wrong; and provides hope.

What happens in the first session?

The first session is an opportunity for us to decide whether we are a good fit for the work you want to do. I’ll ask you to tell me a bit about yourselves, why you are looking at relationship or marriage counselling now, and what your goals are. You’ll have a chance to get a feel for how I work and decide whether, or not, to continue.

Are you a member of a professional organisation?

I am a full member of NZ Association of Counsellors. We have a strong code of ethics which requires on-going professional development; regular supervision and reflection with another practitioner on our work; and adherence to principles of confidentiality, respect for diversity and your autonomy, just to name a few.
